Brawley’s Wrestling Program for Youth Shines at Fresno
BRAWLEY – The Brawley-based Gladiator wrestling program for kids ended its 2013-2014 season this past weekend with an impressive showing at the California USA Kids Folkstyle Championship in Fresno, California.
The two day tournament showcased some of the best wrestlers in the state, pre- high school.
Led by coaches Ray Leon, Victor Martinez, and senior standout wrestler, Vincent Elizalde, this year’s Gladiator team brought home two individual champions, a plethora of top placers, and two divisional team championships. It is a first for the Gladiators program to take a team title and this year they won two, bantam and intermediate divisions.
Robert Platt and Allan Carrillo led the way as each won their division and weight class at the state championship. Platt took first at 75 pounds in the bantam division, while Carrillo took first in the intermediate division at 103 pounds.
Savannah Gomez competed in two separate divisions at the state tournament, impressively placing in both. She took 2nd at the boy’s intermediate division and 3rd at girl’s novice, both at 75 pounds.
Aidian Cazares took 7th in the 95 pound weight class in the novice division
Mathew Guttierrez took 6th at 70 pounds in the bantam division.
Gladiators also sent a pair of brothers to the state meet as Christopher and Daniel Camillo both competed and placed. Christopher took 5th in the bantam division at 60 pounds while Daniel took 8th at intermediate division 60 pounds.
Also in the Middle School Division, Dane Martinez placed 4th at 195 pounds.
“Coach Ray Leon and I are very proud of all the kids that participated. The competition there is unbelievable. We’ve never won a team title in the past and these kids brought home two. We also want to thank the parents for all the support and sacrifices they’ve made this season,” said Coach Victor Martinez on the successful Gladiators season.
The Brawley Gladiators program will be on break until November when next years wrestling season begins again.
