Fatal Sand Rail Collision at the Imperial Sand Dune Recreational Area

chpEL CENTRO – On Saturday, November 30, 2013 at around 5:20 p.m. in the open desert area of the Imperial Sand Dune Recreational Area (Glamis), the driver, Cesar Maceda, a 35 year old male of Phelan, CA was driving a sand rail down Oldsmobile Hill and approximately 20-30 miles per hour.

When Maceda reached the bottom of the hill he lost control of the sand rail.

The sand rail then continued out of control, hitting a parked quad, and a Jeep Cherokee, and continued eastbound striking a black sand rail which the force of the impact pushed the sand rail into a blue pickup and a pedestrian.

The sand rail then came to rest vertically on the top of the black sand rail.

The pedestrian sustained major blunt force trauma from the impact, and was transported to JFK Memorial Hospital by REACH Air Ambulance where he succumbed to his injuries.

There were no other injuries reported.
