The driver, 22-year-old Brooks Mitchel from Torrance, allowed the GMC to drift off the edge of the road and onto the right dirt shoulder.  She overcorrected to the left and lost control.  The vehicle skidded sideways across both northbound lanes and ran off the paved portion of the road into the dirt median, rolling until it came to a stop on its wheels at the median’s center.

An unrestrained passenger, a 45-year-old male from Huntington Beach, was ejected and pronounced dead on the scene.

The right rear passenger, a 45-year-old male from Lathrop CA, was restrained but suffered fatal injuries and was also pronounced dead on the scene.

Another rear passenger, 24-year-old Alexander Arnest from Fountain Valley, was ejected and landed underneath the vehicle with major injuries.

The driver, Mitchel and the surviving passenger, Arnest, were flown by REACH helicopter to Desert Regional Hospital.

Responding Officer Jose Marquez arrived at the hospital to further his investigation and determined that Mitchel was under the influence.  He arrested the driver at the hospital and charged her with DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

The collision remains under investigation.
