EL CENTRO – On January 14, around 3:15 P.M. the California Highway Patrol received a report on a fatal collision in the westbound lanes of State Route 86 in El Centro.
Irma Olds (65) from Palm Springs was driving a 2007 Ford Taurus with two passengers northbound on Lack Road, approaching the intersection with 86. Olds proceeded to make her way across the lanes into the paved center median.
At the same time Edel Estrada (30) from Calexico was driving a 2010 Kenworth with a trailer westbound on 86 in the second lane approaching Lack Road. As Olds crossed the road she moved into the westbound lane of 86. Estrada noticed the Ford was coming into his lane and tried to brake, but it was too late and the front of the Kenworth collided with the right side of the Ford. The Ford was overturned and came to a rest on its roof in the North dirt shoulder of 86.
Olds was flown by Reach helicopter to Desert Regional Medical Center to be treated for her injuries. Olds’ two unknown passengers sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash.
The collisions remains under investigation.
