CALEXICO —Today, U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector prevented a drug smuggling attempt resulting of a seizure of 937 pounds of marijuana.
The incident occurred at around 1:47 a.m., when camera operators spotted a 2001 Dodge Durango heading north across the United States/Mexico boundary. The vehicle then changed directions and attempted to abscond back into Mexico. The driver stopped by vehicle barricades west of the Calexico Port of Entry. The person exited the vehicle along with another occupant and ran back into Mexico.
It was later determined that the vehicle had driven across the border by moving a barricade east of Mt. Signal Road.
Agents searched the vehicle and discovered 42 bundles of marijuana stuffed in the back of the vehicle. Agents seized the marijuana, which has with an estimated street value of $562,200.
U.S. Border Patrol agents turned the vehicle and marijuana over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
