SALTON CITY –Thursday, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station arrested a 67-year-old male and his 20-year-old male passenger for alleged drug smuggling after discovering more than two pounds of methamphetamine hidden on the passenger’s body.
The incident occurred at approximately 7 a.m., after the men approached the Highway 86 checkpoint aboard a white Toyota Corolla and were referred to secondary inspection after a pre-primary alert from a canine detection team.
Once at secondary, Border Patrol agents discovered that the passenger had two packages of methamphetamine taped to his upper thighs.
The methamphetamine had a combined weight of 2.017 pounds with an estimated street value of more than $20,000.
The men, vehicle and the narcotics were turned over to the custody of Drug Enforcement Administration agents for further investigation.
Last fiscal year, El Centro Sector seized more than 445 pounds of methamphetamine.
