Calexico, Calif. â€“ U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico station apprehended a dangerous gang member attempting to make an illegal entry into the United States.
At approximately 9 a.m., Border Patrol agents observed a 28-year-old male and Mexican national identified as Ricardo Mejia-Hernandez, cross into the United States illegally from Mexico. Agents arrested Mejia without incident before he could blend into the populated streets of downtown Calexico.
Mejia was transported to the Calexico Border Patrol station, where it was revealed he was an active member of the â€œSURENOSâ€ criminal street gang out of Atwater, Calif, with two previous felony convictions. Records indicated he had served 14 months in jail after being convicted of assault with a deadly weapon causing possible great bodily injury. Mejia was previously removed from the United States on October 30, 2007.
Mejia is in Border Patrol custody and will be presented for prosecution for re-entry after being previously removed from the United States.
