EL CENTRO – Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of East Brighton Avenue on Tuesday, June 14, at approximately 6:20 P.M. in reference to a suicidal subject. Officers arrived and located an adult male holding a knife and threatening to take his life. Officers quickly worked to evacuate the surrounding areas to ensure the public’s safety.
Over the course of the next three hours, officers and a trained negotiator worked to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution. Throughout this time the male subject refused to drop the knife and continued to state he wanted to end his life.
On-going negotiation efforts failed to produce the desired results and the subject placed the knife to his neck. Officers feared the subject would take his life and deployed diversionary devices, less lethal munitions and a canine. The subject sustained a superficial cut from the knife and was taken into custody without further injury. He was transported to the hospital as a precaution and later taken to a mental health facility.
In keeping with our Mission Statement, “…protection and service is our commitment,” our officers performed exceptionally. No officers or members of the public were injured during this incident.
