EL CENTRO – The Eagle girls beat the Spartans with a landslide victory. The game took place on the Southwest softball field and the Eagles excited their home crowd with an impressive 11-5 win.

The game began with each team showing almost equal strengths. Power hits and several RBIs jumpstarted the game with a bang, and by the end of the first inning the score was 3-2 with the Eagles in the lead. The second inning went off in similar fashion, adding one run for the Spartans and two more for the Eagles.

As the top of the fourth ended, the Spartans had two more runs under their belt and it seemed as though the inning would be another tug of war for dominance. That is, until the Eagles’ turn at bat and their turn to change the game when the team grabbed the game into their hands and showed their power.

Scoring an exciting succession of runs that came to a total of six in one inning, the Eagles brought the grand total to 11-5, stunning the Spartans.

The stun only lasted a moment however, as the Spartans rallied themselves and came after the Eagles with a vengeance. They held the Eagles through the end of the game, keeping them from advancing their lead. The Spartans’ surge wasn’t strong enough to add runs on the board, and the score remained 11-5 through the end.

Player of the game for the Eagles was Celeste Bernal. Bernal was 2-4 with one home run and five RBIs. Also doing well offensively for the Eagles was senior Taylor Ross who was 2-3, with one home run and two RBIs. Following Ross was senior Keana Tamayo who was 1-3 with one run scored and two RBIs and after Tamayo, was junior Victoria Martinez who was 1-2 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Bailey Young led for the Spartans, going 2-4 with two RBIs. Next was junior Jere Silva who was 2-3, with two runs scored and one RBI. Following Silva was sophomore Ahtyanna Glass who was 1-2, with one run scored and one RBI.

The Eagles will travel to Brawley to face the Wildcats on Thursday May 14th at 7 p.m., concluding the Eagles’ regular season play.

The Spartans will face the Calexico Bulldogs in Calexico, also on Thursday May 14th at 6:30 p.m., and this will also be the Spartans’ last game of the season.
