EL CENTRO – Excitement and disappointment named the game last Friday night as the Southwest Eagles’ softball team hosted the Central Spartans as part of the Hilltop Invitational Tournament. Both teams battled strongly but it was the Eagles who ran away with the game, winning 12-2.
The Eagles started strong, gaining an early lead. The Spartans were slow to answer to the Eagles’ power, finally halfway through the game the Spartans rallied. This brought the score to 5-2.
The Spartans had a hold on the Eagles’ momentum, fighting for control of the game. Holding the Eagles through the fourth inning, they looked to turn the game in their favor, however the Eagles broke free and continued their path to victory by the ten-run rule.
For the Eagles, it was pitcher Mackenzie Fannin who secured the win, according to head coach Kevin Kerns. Fannin struck out eight batters and only gave up four hits. On the offensive side for the Eagles, Celeste Bernal led by being 3-3 with one homerun and three RBIs. Taylor Ross was next with 2-3, and had a homerun and three RBIs. Following Ross was Victoria Cruz who was 2-3 as well and had one RBI.
The Eagles’ are now 3-4 in non-league play and will continue on in the Hilltop Invitational this Saturday with their first game at 1:00 p.m. against Steele Canyon and their second game at 3:00 p.m. against Hilltop High. Both games will take place at Hilltop High School.[envira-gallery id=”53629″]
