BRAWLEY – Downtown Brawley experienced another fire in an abandoned building late Monday night.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., the Brawley Fire Department received the call of a fire in progress at 538 Main Street, according to Brawley Fire Chief Chuck Peraza.
“The fire was in the interior,” said Peraza. “Entry was gained through the back where the entrance had been compromised. Whether it was intentional or accidental, we don’t know.”
“Both Brawley stations responded,” said Peraza. “Since it was downtown, I requested assistance from Calipatria and Imperial County Fire. They each sent one engine. There was heavy smoke, but little fire. The fire was contained within the building. We wrapped up the fire at midnight and began the investigation. The building is abandoned, but did have some furniture and debris scattered throughout.”
The owner is out of country.
“The city is trying to get them to come in and abate the issue,” said Peraza. “They need to board it up and secure the building, rather than the city having to do it.”
The fire is still being investigated.
