Donald Dale Sones

Donald D. Sones, 85, passed away January 22, 2015 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Icyphine Sones (Whiteside); daughters, Carol Banagan (Jim) and Donna Brubaker; grandsons, Bryany Banagan and Eric Brubaker; 3 great granddaughters, Sidney, Emily (Eric), and Briana (Bryan), cousin, Steven Milner, Nephew, Scott Sones. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Carol Sones and Bonnie Huxley (Robert), three great aunts Doris Reed, Pauline Fenton, Lois Halterman, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Don was preceded in death by infant daughter, Deborah and infant son Donald Jr., mother Iona Sones (Milner), father Fred Sones and brother Lloyd “Gene” Sones. Don graduated from Calipatria High School in 1948 where he exceled in sports, especially football. He was an Eagle Scout, and volunteered as a Scoutmaster in his 20’s. He attended Imperial Valley College where he was a member of a Championship Football team in the 1950’s and eventually received his certification in Water Treatment and Management.
Don was inducted into the Imperial Valley Football Players Hall of Fame for the 1940’s in 2010. In 1953, he had a very short Pro-Football career with a Los Angeles Football team. He was a professional truck driver for 20 years for Sones’ Family Trucking/Thompson Truck Lines and later changed occupations becoming the Water Superintendant for Southern California Water Company for 20 years.
Don retired as Southern California Water Company District Superintendent of Calipatria, Niland, La Quinta and Morongo Valley. Don enjoyed numerous hobbies including building/flying model airplanes, scuba diving, bowling, boating, fishing, waterskiing, camping, hunting and riding quads.
He was a member of several clubs, The Lion’s Club, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge and Christian Men’s Association. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 2:00p.m at Niland Full Gospel Lighthouse Church 115 East Main St. in Niland. Pastor Carol Ingles will officiate. A reception will be held in the Church Reception Hall immediately following. His ashes will be scattered at a later date.
