As officers responded to the area, additional information was received that a 42-year-old El Centro resident was armed and that the caller’s mother had been shot.

Officers arrived on scene and located the caller and her mother in the area. The officer confirmed both the caller and her mother were injured during the event, and the male remained in the residence. Both were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The caller’s mother was later airlifted to an Indio area hospital for further treatment.

Officers quickly set up a perimeter and with the help of Imperial County Sheriff’s Department and Imperial Police Department the scene was secured. The El Centro Police Department Crisis Response Unit; composed of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) arrived on scene to assist.

Both teams made numerous attempts to establish communication with the male subject, including numerous announcements via loudspeaker for the subject to surrender, without success. In an attempt to coax him from the residence, SWAT deployed irritant gas into the residence. After ample opportunity for him to comply with orders given via loudspeaker, the El Centro K9 unit was deployed.
