IMPERIAL – There will be no way to miss Doc’s Farm, the newest animal attraction at the 2013 California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta.
Just look for the large, bright yellow, structure at the edge of the barn area with an adjacent smaller – and just as yellow – out-building, featuring several colorful hand washing stations.
Doc’s Farm, the newest interactive education attraction at the fair, will showcase baby animals and their moms. Inside, there will be baby pigs, a newborn calf, goats, ducks and more. The animals inside also will include those that are pregnant with due dates during the fair.
“There may be opportunities for fair guests to see the miracle of birth, ooo and aww over new borns and maybe even the possibility of feeding a baby calf,” said Holly Baker, Fair special projects coordinator who is putting Doc’s Farm together. Baker has run a similar exhibit at the San Diego County Fair.
The local exhibit is named in honor of “Doc” James Thompson, a long time Valley veterinarian who died in a tragic plane crash in Arizona last October. The attraction, which had been in the planning stages for several years, was given his name because “He was not only a beloved veterinarian, but Doc also gave much of himself to mentor 4-H and FFA members in their animal projects,” said Theresa Garcia, Fair chief executive officer. “We are proud to dedicate this exhibit as a tribute to his contributions to our fair,” she said.
Baker said Doc’s Farm will offer children and their parents an educational experience that is fitting to Imperial County’s agricultural industry. “In addition to the animals, there will be an interactive grain display and lots of contests including scarecrow building, a rubber chicken toss, a bean bag toss and others,” she said.
In addition, on March 6, there is a backyard compost seminar scheduled in the barn during fair hours.
The 2013 California Mid-Winter Fair, with a theme of “Experience the Magic” will run from March 1 through March 10. Presale tickets and family value packs are now on sale throughout the Valley. They are available at Sonic Burger in El Centro, Goyal’s Shell, Brawley; the fair box office and all six Rabobank locations in the Valley. Family Value Packs are available at the Mall and the fair box office.
