INDIO, CA – The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday it will seek the death penalty against the man accused of gunning down two Palm Springs police officers.
John Hernandez Felix, 26, is accused of killing Officers Jose “Gilbert” Vega, 63, and Lesley Zerebny, 27, on Oct. 8 with an assault rifle while they responded to a family disturbance call at his home.
He also allegedly wounded a third officer and fired on two others who were not struck by the gunfire.
Felix is charged with two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and numerous firearm felonies, along with special circumstance allegations of murdering a peace officer, lying in wait and committing multiple murders, making him eligible for the death penalty.
He also faces sentence enhancing allegations for wearing a body vest in commission of a felony and for possessing armor-piercing ammunition.
Felix pleaded not guilty to all charges two weeks ago.
