Collision of two rigs on I8 by Mountain Springs Grade

MOUNTAIN SPRINGS ROAD – Two tractor-trailer rigs collided on I-8 east by Mountain Springs Road exit.

Construction on I-8 east has been ongoing most of the summer months as the state repaves sections of Interstate 8 between San Diego and the Imperial Valley. As Cal Trans work on a lane, cones force those that haven’t moved into the open lane to do so. That is where the two trucks hit.

Ernestina Garcia, 44 of San Diego, Ca., was driving a Kenworth  tractor/trailer in the right-hand lane traveling east when the cones closing off her lane forced her into the left hand lane.

Michael Garcia, 67 of Bonita, CA, was driving his 2000 Volvo tractor/trailer ahead of Ernestina in the left-hand lane when her left front clipped his rig on the right rear end as she changed lanes.

This caused Ernestina Garcia to veer into the center divider and then go over the left shoulder abutment.

Ernestina Garcia complained of  pain to her left shoulder but refused any medical treatment.

Michael Garcia was not injured.

Investigating officer Sanchez said the accident is still under investigation.
