EL CENTRO – The El Centro Spartans hosted the Coachella Valley Arabs for a non-conference game Friday night where the Arabs took control of the game, taking down the Spartans 28-10.

Early in the first quarter, the Arabs took control of the tempo of the game, putting up 14 points. Arab quarterback Armando Deniz (#1) led his team to the end zone many times, completing a total of 20 passes for the night.

The Arabs’ JJ Rodriguez (#3) was one of the receivers, finding the ball to score two touchdowns for his team.

Late in the first quarter, the Spartans attempted to march up the field to lower the deficiency, but without success as the Arab defense shut them down in the first quarter of play.

The Arab defense included Michael Cecena (#42) who contributed to his team’s defense, sacking Central’s QB Ricky Guzman (#30) bringing up a fourth down for the Spartans and forcing them to punt.

The Arabs finished the first quarter with possession of the ball leading into the second quarter of play. Still hungry for the win, Coachella threw a pass to receiver Jacob Salazar (#80) for for another touchdown drive.

Down by 21 halfway into the second quarter, El Centro scored a touchdown of their own when Guzman was able to connect with Gus Quinones (#24) for a 33-yard gain, pushing home into the end zone.

The crowd takes to their feet to cheer on the Spartans in their attempts to lower the Arabs’ lead before the half at Friday’s game.

With time dwindling down in the second quarter, the Arab’s offense took the field for one final drive before the half. Coachella’s Deniz (#1) drove his team up the field with help from running back Romeo Martinez (#34). With Coachella in the red-zone, Deniz  gave the ball to Martinez one more time, for a hard run into the end zone for one last touchdown before the half, making the score 28-7.

With time still on the clock, Central was able to drive the ball to their own side for a field goal attempt before the half as Guzman switched roles to kicker and set up for the three points, but he missed the field goal attempt.

After the half, the Spartans received the kick off for the start of the third quarter, but the Central offense was unable to drive the ball into the end zone. Guzman took on the role of kicker once again, and this time was successful in his kick, bringing the Spartan’s score to 10.

And yet, the Arabs managed to hold the Spartans scoreless through the fourth quarter and finished the game with a winning score of 28-10.

With this loss, Central will take to the road for a non-conference match up against the San Diego Cavers  September 16.
