IMPERIAL – On March 23, 2016 City staff attended the District 12 California Parks Recreation Society Awards and Installation breakfast where the City of Imperial was recognized for the Imperial Market Days event series, featuring Aviation Day.
Recreation Manager Ember Haller explained to the attendees that part of the event is to educate youth on the many opportunities the Aviation industry has to offer. In addition to the free flights for kids, the City offers a “5K on the Runway”, Family Fun Zone, live music, Farmer’s Market with produce and fresh baked goods, and local specialty food and craft vendors.
In collaboration with the Imperial County Aviation Day Committee, free flights for children ages 8 to 17 are provided through volunteer pilots. Participation from the NAF El Centro Navy Base is also an essential part of the program. The Blue Angles launch team plays a key role sending the planes into the sky.
Aviation Day Committee Chairman Dennis Logue was recognized at the City of Imperial Council meeting on April 6, 2016. “Dennis is Aviation Day 24/7,” stated Haller. He volunteers his time to organize pilots, donations such as food and fuel for the planes, parking attendants and more without wanting so much as a thank you. “We were able to fly 176 kids at this year’s Aviation Day, which is over 50 more than we did the previous year,” said Dennis.
The City of Imperial and Aviation Day Committee look forward to reaching new heights as they begin planning the 2017 Imperial Market Days “Aviation Day” event.
