City of Brawley hires new attorney

BRAWLEY – The Brawley City Council hired a new city attorney Friday in closed session to fill the position vacated by outgoing attorney Dennis Morita.

Bill Smerdon is now the attorney for the City of Brawley.

“We have decided to accept the agreement with Frank Ozwalt and Associates, with the representative being Mr. Smerdon,” said Brawley Mayor Don Campbell. “This agreement will go into effect shortly after September 1st.”

Smerdon is a graduate of San Diego State University and the San Diego School of Law.  His early legal career began in the U. S. Navy JAG.  He has resided in Brawley for nearly 20 years with his wife, local artist Deborah Smerdon.  Mr. Smerdon is currently in practice with Oswalt & Associates.  He has served the City of Calipatria as the City Attorney for 17 years and provided legal services to a number of local public agencies, including IID, the City of El Centro and the County of Imperial.

“I would like to thank the council,” said Smerdon. “I have been a Brawley resident for 18 years and I have been working with the City of Calipatria for 17 years. I love the North end and I love Brawley. I look forward to working with Brawley.”
