EL CENTRO – On Monday, January 27, 2014 at approximately 7:45 p.m., a 63-year-old Hispanic male from Brawley was driving a 1999 Honda Accord with three male passengers.
The Honda Accord was being driven westbound on Worthington Road approaching the intersection with State Route 115.
Upon reaching the intersection with State Route 115, the driver failed to stop his vehicle for the posted stop sign, in doing so, he drove directly into the direct path of a 1996 Peterbuilt tractor, which was traveling north on State Route 115.
The tractor was towing an enclosed utility trailer, which was loaded with produce. The 38-year-old Hispanic male, of Santa Maria, the driver of the tractor attempted to stop, however, due to the close proximity of the Accord, he was unable to do so and subsequently broadsided the Honda Accord in the middle of the intersection.
The driver and two passengers of the Honda Accord sustained fatal injuries.
The third passenger in the Accord sustained major injuries and was transported by REACH Air Ambulance to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, CA.
The driver of the tractor combination was uninjured.
All occupants of the Accord were wearing their seatbelts.
This collision remains under investigation.
