CHP Stops Wrong-Way Driver on Interstate 8

chp badgeIMPERIAL– On January 20, at 12:03 a.m., CHP Dispatch received a call of a wrong-way driver (Francisca Arias, 53, Calexico) traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes on I-8, west of Highway 115.

As a safety measure, CHP officers performed a traffic break to slow eastbound traffic to a stop.  While officers were traveling eastbound in the eastbound lanes parallel to the driver, emergency lights and sirens were used several times in unsuccessful attempts to stop the 2001 Mercedes-Benz.

However, concerned that the driver would speed up and collide with oncoming traffic ahead, officers used a legal intervention technique and deliberately impacted the left side of the Mercedes-Benz with the left front portion of the patrol vehicle which forced the driver’s vehicle to stop.

No injuries were sustained by the officers or the driver.  The driver was subsequently arrested and booked at the Imperial County Jail for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving wrong way on a highway.
