UPDATE 11:25 March 1, 2014
El Centro — A 25-year-old Poway man died after his SUV crashed on an El Centro freeway early Friday morning, a California Highway Patrol official said.
Daniel Boe was a professional disc golfer and was returning from a tournament in Arizona when the crash occurred, said his mother, Donna Boe.
CHP Officer Germán Lazarin said Boe lost control of his 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee while traveling westbound on Interstate 8, west of Forrester Road.
He drove into the dirt center divider, with the SUV winding up on the other side of the freeway. It overturned in the eastbound lanes of I-8, landing on its roof on the shoulder.
The CHP received a call about debris in the road, and officers found Boe and the SUV about 2:45 a.m., Lazarin said. He died shortly afterward, the officer said.
Lazarin said the freeway is sparsely traveled at that hour, and there were no witnesses to the crash.
CHP officials said the roads were dry at the time.
Donna Boe said her son loved sports and played volleyball in high school.
Boe graduated from Rancho Bernardo High School in 2006. He worked at a Costco and spent most of his free time on the disc golf course, his mother said.
“He was a gentle giant,†she said. “He was as sweet as can be. He was just a good guy with a heart of gold.â€
A longtime friend, Brian Wilson of San Diego, said friends held a candlelight vigil for Boe Friday night in Kit Carson Park in Escondido, where he loved to play disc golf.
Wilson said he had known Boe since he was 10 years old. He said Boe was well-loved and “always had a smile on his face.â€
