On Saturday morning, shortly before 7:00 a.m., Fidel Tovar Garcia, 59 from Coachella, was driving his 1994 Chrysler, eastbound on Highway 78, approaching the intersection with Hovley Road with four other passengers.
Rose C. Nakadaira, 81 from Calipatria was driving her 2006 Toyota alone, south on Hovley Road, approaching the intersection with Hwy 78.
Upon entering the intersection at Hwy 78, Nakadaira failed to yield the right of way to Garcia.
Then, Nakadaira’s vehicle struck the left front side of Garcia’s Chrysler, causing Garcia to veer out of control in a southeasterly direction.
Garcia continued in this direction across the traffic lanes before subsequently overturning along the south dirt shoulder on 78.
Garcia’s left rear passenger suffered fatal injuries as a direct result of this traffic collision.
Nadadaira complained of pain to her left ear and was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital.
Garcia had minor injuries, complaining of chest and leg pain. He was transported to Desert Regional at Palm Springs.
Gilberto Carrazco, 56 years old from Calexico, a passenger with Garcia fractured his right hand and was taken to PMH.
Jesus L. Valdez, 25 from Coachella, had minor injuries with lower back and left leg pain. He was taken to PMH.
Sacramento Vargas, 53 of Coachella, complained of pain to his back and taken to PMH.
The 68-year-old male from Indio that succumbed to his blunt force trauma was taken by the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office Coroner.
This collision remains under investigation.
