CHP reports accident involving one of their own

CHP new logoEL CENTRO – On Monday, July 22, 2013, at 5:45 p.m., CHP officer D. Melancon was driving a fully marked CHP patrol vehicle and was stopped on the 4th Street on-ramp at I-8 westbound, with the patrol vehicle emergency lights activated.

Officer Melancon was providing traffic control for a wide-load vehicle which was traveling on I-8 westbound. A Toyota Camry, driven by Julia Mason, 32 of Imperial, entered the 4th Street on-ramp to the I-8 westbound, followed by a Nissan Pick-up driven by Roman Ochoa,19 of Calexico.

Allegedly, Mason failed to realize the CHP patrol vehicle was at a stop ahead of her and subsequently collided into the rear of the CHP patrol vehicle.

Roman allegedly failed to stop for both vehicles ahead of him and collided into both the Toyota and the CHP patrol vehicle.

This collision is still under investigation.

No arrests were made and the only injury was to Officer Melancon who was seen at ECRMC for pain.
