CHP releases report on Saturday’s ATV fatality


chpEL CENTRO – On May 3, around 6:40 a.m., the CHP reported that their dispatch had been advised of a traffic collision with a possible fatality that occurred on Jessup and Diehl Road.


The reporting officer, J.M. Flores, stated that upon his arrival, the 2012 Yamaha 700 ATV was overturned within the Wixom irrigation ditch.


The driver, who was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, and the passenger were traveling south on Jessup Road.


For unknown reasons, the driver crossed Diehl Road and drove his AVT into the Wixom ditch where it became airborne and collided with the west dirt embankment.


The passenger, an 18-year-old male from Imperial was ejected and sustained fatal injuries due to blunt force trauma.


The driver, a 16-year old male, from El Centro was trapped under the overturned ATV and was transported by gold Cross Ambulance to El Centro Regional Hospital were he was treated for his injuries, an orbital fracture of his right eye, and a bruised lung


The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
