EL CENTRO â€“ On Saturday, October 18, 2014 at around 5:35 p.m. Karina Gomez, age 33 of La Mesa, CA was driving her 2008 Volkswagen Jetta eastbound on Evan Hewes Highway, in the #1 lane and slowing to turn Northbound onto State Route 115.
At the same time, Thomas E. Humphreys Sr., age 69 of Holtville, was driving his 2013 Ford F-150, Westbound on Evan Hewes Highway, in the #2 lane, at a stated speed of 65 mph.
Humphreys Sr. had his son Thomas Humphreys Jr. age 46 of El Centro, riding in the right front passenger seat of the F-150
As Gomez failed to yield the right of way to the F-150, who was lawfully occupying the #2 lane of Westbound Evan Hewes Highway and preceded Northbound directly into the path of the F-150.
Humphreys Sr. turned the steering wheel of the F-150 to the right, but was unable to avoid a collision with the Jetta.
Subsequently, the front end of the F-150 collided with the Jetta, and as a result, Gomez sustained major injuries and was flown from the scene by REACH Air Ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
Humphreys Sr. sustained major injuries to his right wrist and was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center.
Passenger, Thomas Humphreys Jr. was complaining of lower back pain and advised he would seek his own transportation to El Centro Regional Medical Center.
This collision remains under investigation.
