EL CENTRO â€“ On Sunday, November 16, 2014 at around 7:50 a.m., Sandra Diane Gerardo, age 30 of Calexico, was driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla southbound on Clark Road, north of Heber Road.
Nichole Churchwell, age 24 of Calexico, was a right front passenger in the Toyota while Lucy Laveaga, age 33 of Calexico, was seated in the right rear passenger seat of the Toyota.
As Gerardo traveled Southbound, she allowed her vehicle to run off the west paved road edge of Clark Road, just North of Heber Road.
Gerardo was unable to regain control of the Toyotaâ€™s steering as it ran off the road. The Toyota proceeded in a southwesterly direction until colliding with a telephone post, which was just south of the parked water tank trailer.
The Toyota proceeded in a southwesterly direction until it overturned into an agricultural field.
After investigating the collision, it was determined that Gerardo had been drinking alcoholic beverages prior to driving and was arrested for suspicion of DUI.
Gerardo was cited and released to El Centro Regional Medical Center due to her injuries.
Nichole Churchwell sustained major injuries and was flown to Desert Regional Hospital for X-rays and Cat Scans.
Lucy Laveaga sustained minor cuts to the face and arm.
