EL CENTRO – On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at around 7:50 p.m., Gilberto Padillavenegas, 48, Imperial, was driving a 2007 Nissan Frontier, and traveling westbound at 70 mph in the right hand lane of Interstate 8, East of Bowker Road.
A male whose name was withheld, age 63 of Prescott, AZ, was driving a 2005 Kia Sedona. He was also traveling westbound in the right hand lane approaching the rear of Padillavenegas at a much higher rate of speed.
The Arizona man failed to adjust his spend or change lanes and collided into the rear of Padillavenegas.
The impact caused the 63 year old to lose control of his vehicle. He traveled to the left, over the center dirt median and across the eastbound lanes, where he overturned on the south dirt shoulder of Interstate 8.
Since he was not wearing his seat belt, he was ejected during the roll-over.
He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
Padillavenegas was able to control his vehicle and steered to the right, stopping on the right paved shoulder and called 911.
EL CENTRO – On Thursday, October 2, 2014, at approximately 5:50 a.m., Jose L Lucero Infante, age 58 of Brawley, was driving a 1988 Dodge Pickup, westbound on Cady Road at approximately 50 mph.
Jose L. Samento, age 51 of Calexico, was driving a tractor on Cady Road ahead of Infante at a stated speed of 10 mph.
Due to the tractor not having any lights and being dark outside, Infante failed to see the tractor ahead of him, causing the right front of his pickup to collide with the left rear of the tractor.
The impact caused Sarmento to be ejected from the tractor.
Infante also suffered major injuries due to not being restrained at the time of the collision.
This collision remains under investigation.
