EL CENTRO – On Saturday, May 24, 2014 at approximately 9:20 p.m. an 18-year-old female from Westmorland was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry with one female passenger, also from Westmorland.
The Camry, eastbound on Bannister Road, approached the intersection with Forrester Road. Upon reaching the intersection, the Toyota failed to yield the right of way at a posted stop sign to cross traffic which was not required to stop.
In doing so the Camry drove directly into the path of a 2006 Jeep Rubicon whish was traveling southbound on Forrester Road.
Herbert Drewry, age 38 of Brawley, driving the Jeep, attempted to stop, however, due to the close proximity of the Camry, he was unable to do so and subsequently broadsided the Camry within the intersection.
The driver and passenger of the Camry sustained fatal injuries.
The driver of the Jeep suffered major injuries to the chest and wrist but refused medical treatment at the scene.
All occupants of the Camry were wearing their seatbelts, while the driver of the Jeep did not appear to be wearing one at the time of the collision.
This collision remains under investigation.
