On Saturday, January 18, at approximately 5:50 a.m. Oscar Farias Sanchez, age 20 of Mecca, CA was driving a 2004 Nissan Sentra. Sanchez and his four passengers were returning to Mecca, CA after spending time in Mexicali, Mexico.
The four passengers were asleep, Sanchez and the right front passengers were wearing their seat belts, and the three rear passengers were not.
While driving, Sanchez allowed the Sentra to drift into the dirt center median of I-8 westbound between the railroad under cross, West of Dogwood Road and State Route 86.
Sanchez turned the steering wheel to the right, skidded across the westbound lanes, and drove over and down a dirt embankment then overturn, ejecting the unrestrained rear seat passenger.
Sanchez and his right front passenger removed their seat belts and exited the vehicle on their own.
The driver sustained minor injuries along with another passenger, two of the passenger’s sustained major injuries, including internal, head and C-spine. The fourth passenger sustained fatal blunt force trauma.
Alcohol is not an attributing factor in this collision.
