EL CENTRO — Earning their first league win, the El Centro Spartans hosted the Palo Verde Yellow Jackets in their homecoming game, beating the Yellow Jackets 17-0 Friday.
With the game scoreless for the first half of quarter play, the Spartans came alive with an interception by Raymond Ortiz (#2), bringing out the offense late in the first quarter. On the first play of Central’s possession, Gus Quinones (#24), gave a good run, moving his team up the field close to the first down.
However, the Yellow Jackets held the Spartans, bringing a fourth down, causing Central’s Coach Michael Hobbs to go for it with a few minutes left in the first quarter.
With an option play, the Spartans’ QB Ricky Guzman (#30), pitched the ball to Quinones for a first down, but unfortunately for the Spartans, a holding call brought the run to a halt, forcing them to punt, and giving the Yellow Jackets the ball late in the first quarter.
On the Yellow Jackets’ possession, a fumble was recovered by the Spartans’ Dominique Turnage (#57), who ran it to the endzone, giving the Spartans the first points, 7-0, before heading into the second quarter.
Both the Spartans and Yellow Jacket defenses held down the offense, making Turnage’s score the only touchdown of the first half.
Going into the latter half of the third quarter, Central’s offense hit pay dirt with Guzman kicking a 37-yard field goal, bringing the score of 10-0, as the teams went into the fourth quarter.
Both teams struggled at driving the ball up the field as their respective defenses worked to shut down scoring.
The Spartans got their groove back putting up one last touchdown, ending the game, 17-0, for Central’s homecoming match up.
The El Centro Spartans will move on to host the Calexico Bulldogs in next week’s game, to try and improve their 1-2 league record.[envira-gallery id=”87107″]
