CALEXICO – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Calexico downtown port of entry on Saturday discovered $286,000 worth of methamphetamine concealed under the rear seats of a vehicle.

The incident occurred shortly after 7:45 a.m. on Oct. 11, when a CBP officer conducting inspections of vehicles and travelers encountered a 2001 blue Chevy Tracker, driven by a 61-year-old male Mexican citizen.  The officer referred both the vehicle and driver to a secure area for further examination.

During the intensive inspection, officers utilized the port’s imaging system and a canine team that led officers to the discovery of 17 wrapped packages of methamphetamine concealed inside the vehicle’s rear seat frames.  The narcotics weighed approximately 44 pounds.

The driver, a resident of Mexicali, Baja California, was arrested and turned over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations agents for further processing.
