Cats earn competitive IVL win over Central

BRAWLEY – The Wildcats of Brawley Union High wrestling squad was in action Wednesday night in matchup against all-around school – rival Central in El Centro.

Though Brawley cruised to a dominant 53-21 overall match victory, Central was competitive in matches throughout and provided a great learning experience for the younger Wildcats on the squad.

Brawley jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead on a first round pin from Bren Pinedo (108) and a walkover win for Jacob Moreno (115).

Central got on the board next with an exiting come from behind third-round pin from Spartan Steve Paramo (122).

Two decisions in a row from Brawley’s Pete Martinez (126) and Victor Gonzales (134), and two walkover wins Fernando Acuna (138) and Manuel Morales (145) gave the Wildcats breathing room heading into what would be the match of the night between 152 pounders Marco Caruso (central) and Steven Baeza (Brawley).

In a back and forth match that included near falls for both competitors and an brief injury timeout, Brawley’s Steven Baeza was able to earn a pin with only seconds left in the second period.

Central notched three straight victories over the Wildcats from Gage Cox (160), Isiah Castillo (170), and Jason Jones (182),  but the Wildcats reeled off three straight wins to end the night.

One included a 197 matchup in which Daniel Jauregui put the Wildcats back in the win column for good with a third round pin in another exiting and competitive bout.

The Wildcats will next head to Victor Valley this weekend before hosting the Calexico Bulldogs next Wednesday.
