Calipatria celebrates after their game winning touchdown in the final seconds of the game.

CALIPATRIA – The Calipatria Hornets football team took on the Maranatha Christian Eagles Friday, ending with a memorable play that allowed Calipatria to claim victory with a final score of 13-7.

The game started off slow, but picked up half way through the first quarter when Calipatria scored the first touchdown of the game. Full back Chris Zendejas (#13) made the touchdown for the Hornets, running the ball into the in zone and bringing the crowd to their feet.

With just minutes left in the quarter, Maranatha had a chance to even the playing field. The Eagles drove the ball up the field with Trevor Sheng (#1) producing a big run and taking his team into the red zone. On the next down, quarterback Christian Cortez (#18) threw a pass intended for teammate James Palmer (#10) but the pass was intercepted by Calipatria’s Marco Perez (#4). Perez ran the ball to the 48-yard line giving his team good field goal position and bringing an end to the first quarter.

But starting the second quarter, Calipatria was unable to move the ball up the field after their interception, and turned the ball back over to the Eagles. With the Eagles unable to drive up the field as well, Calipatria got possession back.

With little time left on the clock before the half ended, the Hornet’s Perez lead his team to the goal line. With only seconds left, Perez ran it up the middle and was held at the one-yard line, ending the first half of play. Calipatria went into half-time leading with score of 7-0.

Third quarter had the Hornets receiving and turning the ball over early in their position, failing to convert on fourth down.

The Eagles got the ball back early in the third quarter made it count with running back Sheng taking the ball into the end zone and tying up the game at 7-7. The rest of the quarter had minimal action with neither team able to score to take the lead.

The game remained tied throughout most of the fourth quarter with both team’s defense shutting down each other’s offense.

Calipatria jumped into their offense late in the fourth quarter with seconds left on the clock. With the offense rushing to the line of scrimmage, Perez threw a monster pass connecting with wide receiver Jimmy Mejia (#14) and scored the winning touchdown, giving the Hornets their first win of the season with a score of 13-7.

“The Eagles were a good team and played a really tough game, but we never gave up and it allowed us to leave here today with the win,” said Jimmy Mejia, Calipatria’s receiver.

Following this win, the Hornets play next at a neutral location September 9 against Escondido’s Classical Academy.

“This game allowed us to feel what its like to win again, and I think it will carry forward and allow us to play harder in the weeks to come,” said Mejia.
