Calipatria celebrates their grads

FrontCALIPATRIA – The town of Calipatria gathered under a new moon at Veterans Memorial Field to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2013. With upbeat music blaring from the PA system, seniors congregated outside the fence waiting for the procession music to start.

Senior Alexis Torres said she would be attending California State University at Dominguez Hills, “I chose it because it was the closest to home and by the beach.”

Torres’ friend, Karla Barraza, will travel further this fall when she starts school at UC Santa Cruz.

Fellow graduates, Frank Aguilera and Anthony Fernandez, will stay local, Frank attending IVC to begin a career as a future history teacher, while Fernandez is still mulling his options.

Valedictorian Reynalda Quintero gave a humor laden speech, at one time leading the seniors and parents in a birthday song for a fellow graduate and having the seniors applaud those that had helped them attain their diplomas.

Salutatorian Daniel Ortiz had timely advice for his fellow classmates, “Don’t just dream about your future, because nothing ever happens that way. Instead, work hard to pave the way for that great future. Stay focused on what you are doing, because today’s actions matter and they pave the future we are all striving for.”

Counselor Marisa Gates-Muse presented the Helen Lackey Cox Award to Jane Silva.

The 83 graduates enjoyed a video display followed by fireworks.
