CALIPATRIA – The Calipatria Hornet baseball squad continued its 2016 campaign on Thursday afternoon, with a 7-1 victory over the Mountain Empire Red Hawks on Calipatria High’s home baseball field.
In the second inning, already up 2-0, Hornet senior fielder, Alfonso Romero, came up with a decisive two run scoring hit leading the way to 3 score inning putting the hornets up 5-0 after two innings.
Mountain Empire enjoyed some success in the latter half of the ball game with sparks provided by freshman Trevor Elliot both in pitching and hitting. He provided the hit batting in the lone Red Hawk score.
The Hornets added a run in each of the last two innings and a near, inside-the-park. home run by Hornet George Ruvalcaba contributed some late excitement for the home crowd and more cushion for the Hornets 7-1 hometown victory.
“Julian Medina showed great effort on the mound today. He pitched a complete game and picked up the win for us,” said Calipatria head coach David Corona.
“He was backed up by his offensive scoring early in the game,” he added on the Hornet early hitting success.
Leading the way hitting for the Hornets was Issac Romero who went 3-4 with two triples and one double.
Up next the Hornets (5-1) are on the road facing Southwest High Eagles (6-2-1) on Monday night in El Centro in an interesting early matchup between the two valley squads in the Lions Tournament kickoff game for both teams.
“Southwest is a deep and talented team. The kids are ready for a challenge,” said Corona of the matchup.
“Win or lose we are going to give it 100 percent.”
