CALIPATRIA – Motorcyclists lined the Rademacher Park in Calipatria in support with their local community for the 20th Annual Nathan (Nate) Mata Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser held Saturday.
The event, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., consisted of local car clubs, trucks and motorcycles on display. Many won raffle prizes throughout the day.
Children played on swings as others lined up for face painting. Desserts such as cupcakes and cookies, stacked on tall displays, helped raise money for the cause.
Live music performed while guest enjoyed $8 tri-tip or pork barbecue plates. All the proceeds from the annual event help benefit the graduating Calipatria High School varsity male and female athletes through scholarships.
“I came out to show support for my community today and to help local teens,” said Martha Bermudez of Calipatria.
For 20 years the annual scholarship fundraiser has helped Calipatria High School athletes attend the university and/or junior college of their choice. In 1994, the parents established the Nate Mata Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser in an effort to keep the memory of Nathan Mata going, following his death Dec. 4, 1993.
“This is good for Calipat because we need as much help and support for our school as we can get,” said Ruth Dominguez about the Nate Mata Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser.
