Calexico Lady Bulldogs advance in tournament play to championship round

CALEXICO – The Calexico lady Bulldog’s softball team came up with the win, 1-0, against the Sweetwater Red Devils for the semi-final game of the Monte Vista Tournament on March 31. The low scoring game had Calexico scoring their only run in the first inning with a RBI by senior Kasey Cazares that scored sophomore Nicole Moran.

Calexico girls had five hits the entire game, Sweetwater bats struck six hits but failed to score even once to get themselves back into the game.

Calexico pitcher Kasey Cazares was named player of the game for her spectacular arm, with a whopping 15 strike outs that shut out the Sweetwater chances for tournament play as they failed to bring runners across the plate.

The loss moved Sweetwater over to Southwest later that day to play their last game of the tournament. Southwest defeated the Red Devils 2 to 1 to eliminate them from the tournament.

The win moved the Calexico softball team into the finals of the Monte Vista tournament where they will meet up with the Serra Conquistadors for the championship game on April 16th and left Calexico’s head coach Alex Flores preparing for the challenges they will face for the big game.

After the Sweetwater game, Calexico’s softball team record overall is 10-4. The Serra Conquistadors also took down La Jolla Vikings to bring their record to 12-3.  The winner of the April 16 game will be the champion of the Monte Vista Tournament for the 2016 season.
