CALEXICO – Calexico’s 24th Annual Mariachi Festival Sin Fronteras, “Viva Calexico,” inaugurated their four day celebration with the Mariachi Idol competition, Tuesday night, May 12, at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center. Contestants compete through multiple rounds on several nights to display their voice talents.
Contestants showed up wearing traditional Mexican and Mariachi outfits which enhanced the traditional regional Mexican songs chosen by each participant. Nerves and sweaty palms overcame the participants as they awaited their turn.
By the end of the night, eleven finalist were chosen. Ruben Serrano from Brawley, Aaron Hernandez and Enrique Terrones “El Asendado” from El Centro, Andres Esquer, Emeterio Beltran, Daniel Torres, and April Estephania Rivas from Mexicali MX, Rosa Zuniga, Flor Castro, Joseph Guerra and the youngest participant, 13-year-old Karen Rodrigues from Calexico.
