Calexico Bulldogs Take Charge Against the Eagles

EL CENTRO- The Southwest Eagles hosted the Calexico Bulldogs for their second match-up of the season, hoping to avenge their loss from their first volleyball battle.Unfortunately, the Eagles could not hold up against the Bulldogs tenacity, losing three sets to one.

At the first set, both teams played evenly, until late in the first set, Calexico grasped and kept the lead over the Eagles. Calexico’s Kayla Rubio (#20) put up seven points serving and had an impressive six blocks and four digs. Calexico won 25 to 19, taking advantage of their momentum over the Eagles.

Second set, Calexico took to the court fired up with an aggressive attitude, pairing their attitude with skills. The Bulldogs controlled the tempo of the game and took a quick six-point lead.

Calexico won the set by a commanding 25 to 11. Star athlete,Luz Gutierrez (#7), scored 10 points and three digs aiding her team in a big way on the court.

dsc04256Going into the third set, the Eagles gave their all to avoid loosing by a shutout. The set went back and fourth until the very end, when the lady Eagles found their groove and seized this set for their own, with a final score of 25 to 22. The Eagles have Taylor Moorhead (#13) to thank for pushing her team in the winning this set Moorhead also leads the team in kills.

In the fourth set of the match Calexico choices were to finish the game or allow Southwest to tie things up. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they took a quick eight-point lead over the Eagles to take the pressure off.

Natalia Pacheco (#25) demonstrated her skills scoring 17 points with nine kills and three digs. Iran Alvarez (#22) also had a fierce game scoring 18 points with 14 kills and five digs to finish off the Eagles. The Bulldogs took the last set with a score of 25 to 12, beating the Eagles in their own court.

With this win it brought Bulldogs record to 3-5 in league play. The Bulldogs will host the second place Imperial Tigers for their next home conference game to try and advance their league record for the season on October 13.
