CALEXICOÂ â€”Â Hosting the San Luis Sidewinders Friday in a home baseball match-up, the Calexico Bulldogs lost with a score of 14-6.
The Sidewinders began the game with big hits by Ramon Miranda (#1) and Gabriel Ponce (#11) putting the first two runners on base. With runners on second and third, Hernan Yanez (#14) drove in the two runs with a line drive to right field, giving the Sidewinders a quick two-point lead over the Bulldogs. Closing out the first inning, the Sidewinders put up three more runs, while the Bulldogs struggled at the plate, making it 3-0.
Stepping up to the plateÂ in the second inning,Â the Sidewinders swung for another successful half-inning with Gerardo Hernandez (#7) first to get on base with a line drive to left field. With Hernandez on second, Miranda slugged one to mid-center field, driving in Hernandez for an RBI. San Luis drove in two more runs with hits by Ponce, Yanez, and Jesus Pulido (#15), bringing the total runs for the Sidewinders to six.
The Bulldogs gained their first runs in the second inning with a single to left field by Luis Garcia (#5). Mike Ikeda (#6) advanced the runners with a hit to the outfield. Then, driving in Garcia, Eric Rojo (#8) hit a line drive in the center field gap, getting the Bulldogs on the board. The Bulldogs drove in three more runs in the second inning, bringing the score to 6-4.
In the third inning, the Sidewinders’ Yanez and Pulido connected with the ball putting them on base. Next to make contact, Daniel Aceves (#2) hit a shot past the left fielder, sending his teammates home for two runs. The Sidewinders managed two more runs in the top of the third, sending the score to 10-4.
Finally coming to the plate after a long inning, the Bulldogs’ Mario Garcia (#11) connected with the ball, sending it to second for a single. Arturo Gamboa (#1) slugged a hard hit ball to short stop for a single and advanced Garcia to second. With a runner in scoring position, Joanthony Galavis (#13) hit in Garcia with a line drive to center field. The Bulldogs found their second run of the third with a walk-in run by Galavis, making the score 10-6 as they headed into the fourth inning.
The fourth inning remained scoreless for both teams, so the Sidewinders pushed forward in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs and one more run in the sixth. The Bulldogs were scoreless in the last two innings, bringing the final score to 14-6, and giving Calexico its second loss for the season.
The Bulldogs will head to Calipatria March 14 for their fourth game of the season.
