BRAWLEY – Senior Awards Night at Palmer Auditorium was filled with proud families, excited students, and a supportive community to send off the Brawley Union High School Class of 2016 into the next step of life.
Thousands of dollars in scholarships were given out Wednesday night by agencies from Brawley and throughout Imperial Valley. The 48 agencies awarded the scholarships based on intended major, and what students could possibly give back to their community.
Brawley Union High also handed out specific awards for academic prowess throughout the year.
Senior awards night underwent some modifications for this year, with the school deciding to not release a Top 20 students list for the Class of 2016. Instead, the district opted to use the Latin honors system that colleges and universities use, bestowing the titles of Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude for top students.
As Assistant Principal Bonnie Munguia pointed out as the students came up on stage, for the first time there was actually a group of 26 top students who will likely receive the Cum Laude cords once final grades are turned in.
