Brawley Wildcats Take Down Cibola Raiders in Home Volleyball Match


brawley-wildcat-logoBRAWLEY – The Brawley Wildcats volleyball team hosted the Cibola Raiders Thursday for its second match of the 2016 season. With Brawley losing its first match against Yuma Catholic, the players rose to the challenge, defeating the Raiders three sets to one.

As the crowd cheered, Brawley took a quick lead over the Raiders winning the first set with a final score of 25-17.

The Raiders fought back, changing the pace of the game in their favor, but Brawley was quick to answer, scoring the final point of the match with help from junior Logan Nemlowill (4), who assisted her team in their efforts with 14 kills and four blocks.

Moving into the second set, Cibola scored the first points. Cibola’s Alyssa Craig, a senior, had seven kills helping her team win the second set and tying up the match. Honor Owens, a sophomore from Cibola, had a big night for her team as well, scoring five kills of her own. Brawley’s ladies fought hard with a strong defense, but were unsuccessful in the end, with Cibola winning the set with a final score of 25-20.

The suspense of the match rose heading into the third set as both crowds cheered, trying to aid their team.

With both teams rallying, Brawley came up with the first points of the third set. Taylor Lyster (16), a senior Wildcat, demonstrated her talents with ten kills, allowing her team to pull ahead of the Raiders.

Trailing, the Raiders fought back in an attempt to even the score, but were shut down by the Wildcat’s Nemlowill (4) getting four blocks. With the end of the third set drawing to a close, Brawley’s Alysia Gallardo (7) scored to secure the lead over the Raiders and ending the third set with a final score of 25-20 for the Wildcats.

As the fourth set got underway, Cibola had one final chance to tie, or face losing the whole match. The Raiders started off slow, scoring minimal points. On Brawley’s side, the team kept up its momentum with senior Taylor Caranza (5) getting 14 kills for the night. Going into the last points of the set, Brawley maintained their composure, winning with a final score of 25-15.

Winning the last set, Brawley won the match 3-1, giving Wildcats volleyball its first win of the season. They will head to Gila Ridge September 6.
