BRAWLEY — Opening the week of Cattle Call events, Brawley held the 31st Annual Chili Cook-off Saturday, where monstrous crowds turned out to initiate the lively pre-rodeo activities.

With a total of 12 teams participating, each chili cook-off team brought its best in an effort to win over the taste buds from both attendees and judges. Winners would claim definitive bragging rights for a year and a $1,000 grand prize.

For entertainment, the crowds enjoyed a cultural folklorio dance performance, giving them a taste of Cattle Call’s mariachi night that will be held later in the week.

Once the judges had tasted all the competing recipes, it was time to announce the big winners of the day.

Best in Show was won by RDO Water Company with its over-the-top display in its booth.

With great deliberation, the judges decided on the first through third place winners for overall best tasting chili. Third place went to Los Chilies Caliente, and second went to Brawley’s Gateway Church.

With anticipation in the air, the remaining teams listened in amongst the crowd in hopes of hearing their name. The judges ruled first-time competitors, RDO Water, first place, and presented them with a check for $1,000 and humongous bragging rights.

The RDO team said they used the competition as a team-building exercise for work, and proved their success by not only winning best chili, but also winning the best in show award with their decorated booth.
