(October 5, 2012. Brawley) The Brawley Fire Department received a call about 10:45 p.m. Thursday evening about a fire in progress on 8th Street at the old Red Stallion, Tops, and Mona’s building, across the street from the IID building.
When they arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames.
Interim Fire Chief Chuck Peraza said, “When the second alarm was sounded, Imperial County, El Centro, Calipat, and Westmorland all responded. We also have Gold Cross, Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, Gas Company representatives, and IID here. Mutual aid is an absolute must.”
The Brawley Police department was already beginning their investigation before the flames were knocked down.
“On the law enforcement side,” said Brawley Police Commander Brett Houser, “we’re lucky to have the Sheriff’s Office come in to assist us in maintaining perimeters to let us get set up while we maintain emergency services in the rest of the city.”
The community of Brawley has had its share of disasters beginning with the earthquake swarms of August 25th and the downtown fire at Superior Furniture September 14th.
The building was unoccupied and all of the businesses have been closed for some time.
