Thursday, One World Beef announced the completion of its acquisition of the shuttered National Beef processing plant located in Brawley, CA. OWB Packers, LLC , an affiliate of One World Beef, will operate the plant and expects to restart operations later this year.
“The acquisition has been a long, intense and interesting journey,” said Eric Brandt, CEO of the One World companies. “But we’ve persevered and with the enormous support we received from the Imperial Irrigation District, the City of Brawley, the County of Imperial, and the Regional Water Quality Board, we were able to complete the purchase of the plant. We would like to express our sincerest appreciation to the ad hoc committee and Imperial Valley County Supervisor Ryan Kelley, District 4 for their tireless support of this project and are immensely grateful to those who embraced our vision of bringing beef processing back to the Imperial Valley and to recapturing some of the 1,300 jobs that were lost when the plant was shut down.”
Originally built in 2001 by a consortium of cattle feeders from the Imperial Valley, the 337,000 square foot facility was acquired by National Beef, the fourth largest beef processor in the country, in 2006. Citing lack of sufficient cattle supply stemming from the Midwestern drought, National shuttered the plant in April of 2014.
“Having grown up here in Brawley, and seen the plant evolve through various owners, we just felt compelled to make a concerted effort to try and acquire it” said Brandt. “My family settled here in the 1930s and it’s difficult to see Brawley suffering from the highest unemployment rate in California.”
