BORDER PATROL: The drug dog’s nose knows, smuggler learns

canine drugsSALTON SEA – When a 23-year-old Mexico woman drove up to the Highway 86 border checkpoint near the Salton Sea, nothing appeared out of the ordinary. To the human El Centro Sector Border Patrol officers, that is.

But a canine officer sniffed out a smuggler, the Border Patrol said.

The dog alerted the officers, and the driver was pulled to the side for an inspection. Agents said they discovered 16 wrapped packages of methamphetamine in a compartment that had been added under the Dodge Durango’s rear passenger seat.

The meth had a combined weight of 20.8 pounds with an estimated street value of more than $665,000, the Border Patrol said in a news release.

The woman, a citizen of Mexico, was arrested.
