SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station arrested a couple suspected of drug smuggling at the Highway 86 checkpoint today after they discovered cylindrical-shaped packages of methamphetamine in their vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. at the checkpoint, after Border Patrol agents encountered a 33-year-old man driving a 2008 Gray Ford Fusion with a 31-year-old woman passenger inside.

A Border Patrol canine detection team alerted to the vehicle. Agents then referred the driver to secondary for a closer examination. After an intensive search agents uncovered 22 cylindrical-shaped packages of methamphetamine hidden in the vehicle’s rocker panels.

The methamphetamine had a combined weight of 22 pounds with an estimated street value of $220,000.

The couple, both Mexican nationals, the vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.

Last fiscal year, El Centro Sector seized more than 445 pounds of methamphetamine.
