Border agents took 10 undocumented immigrants into custody and arrested two suspected smugglers early Thursday near the Salton Sea.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents spotted an inflatable boat with multiple passengers traveling north on the Salton Sea, the border protection agency reported today.
The boat docked near Mecca, where a Ford F-150 pickup waited to pick up the 10 passengers.
Agents stopped the pickup and determined the 10 people were in the country illegally. Eight of them are from Mexico and the other two are from El Salvador, according to the agency.
The truck driver, a 45-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested on suspicion of smuggling immigrants.
Agents also arrested the boat operator, who was identified as a 45-year-old man from Mexico.
Everyone involved is in custody of the border patrol pending further investigation.
