BRAWLEY – Organized by Pastor Richard Rodriguez, House of Bread Ministries was out in full force Saturday morning hosting its 7th Annual Backpack Giveaway at the Lions Center in Brawley.
School supplies were acquired by the church to provide kids in the community adequate materials for the start of the 2016-2017 school year.
“We try to demonstrate God’s love, so we do it through acts of kindness,” said Rodriguez. “Anybody could come. Nobody’s refused.”
“All the workers here are church volunteers,” he said. “We want to show that everybody has a part and can do something for their community.”
Through donations, House of Bread Ministries was able to purchase the school supplies. The kids wound through an assembly line of crayons, pencils, backpacks, paper, and notebooks.
Six-year-old Zachary Morales Melendi of Brawley, appeared elated to receive his supplies for the beginning of his first grade year at Oakley School.
“I’m happy and hopeful now that he is prepared and eager for school to start this year,” said his mother, Leonora Melendi.
“The main purpose of this event is to share the goodness of God,” said Rodriguez. “Our mission is to instill love and hope. The backpacks one day are gonna wear out and the school supplies will be gone, but the love and hope will remain, and that lasts forever.”
